Makoto E-Zine series #77 Recommended for beginner to intermediate learners of Japanese. You can also buy this series on Amazon by clicking here - Makoto #77 Kindle or Paperback Edition Do you know the etymology for 富士山 (ふじさん - Mt. Fuji)? No? Well, don’t feel bad. No one else really knows for sure, but in today’s issue, we explore a few intriguing origin stories. Hint: it has something to do with Princess Kaguya! The beginner reader, titled “Mandarin Orange,” is a fun story about how easy it is to mess up Japanese. It’s a great example of how trying to be polite can sometimes come off as shockingly rude. The cover says, 暑(あつ)くなってきましたね, which means, “It’s becoming hot, don’t you think?” This phrase combines the adverbial form of  暑(あつ)い (hot) and なってきました which indicates a process that has been happening and has now reached the present. "なって" (becoming) + "きました" (has come to be) implies that the temperature has been rising and it is now noticeably hot. So, dig in and let us know if you have any questions. ➡️ How to read the eBooks: You may need to follow the steps outlined in our eBook guide. ➡️ To purchase a digital or print version, kindly click the "Format" option below the product title. Makoto E-Zine series #83 Recommended for beginner to intermediate learners of Japanese. You can purchase the printed version on Amazon by clicking here. Happy New Year from the Makoto Team! This month's cover features a stunning photo of 金閣寺(きんかくじ) (the Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto, captured just last month by our talented editor Neddy and her equally talented husband. Doesn’t it make you feel like taking a trip to Kyoto? Whether you've visited Kyoto many times or it’s still on your bucket list, this iconic sight is always awe-inspiring. Speaking of iconic, let’s talk about ラーメン. Did you know that while it’s considered one of Japan’s quintessential comfort foods, it actually has roots in Chinese cuisine? Our etymology feature dives into how those humble wheat noodles twisted and turned their way into Japanese hearts—and stomachs—over centuries. Here’s a teaser: Japan’s first ramen shop, 来々軒 (らいらいけん), opened in 1910, and the rest is delicious history. But ramen isn’t just about slurping noodles—it’s about the culture that surrounds it. From regional variations to late-night ramen adventures (who hasn’t craved a steaming bowl after a long day?), it’s no wonder ramen is beloved worldwide. Have a favorite ramen topping? Egg, chashu, or maybe corn and butter? Whatever your preference, there's no wrong way to enjoy it. This issue is packed with goodies to start your year with a smile: jokes and puns, a deep dive into the prefecture of Okayama, the rhythmic charm of the onomatopoeia どきどき, and a fresh set of Japanese Readers for learners of all levels. Let’s ring in 2024 with laughter, learning, and maybe a steaming bowl of noodles by your side. ➡️ How to read the eBooks: You may need to follow the steps outlined in our eBook guide. ➡️ To purchase a digital or print version, kindly click the "Format" option below the product title. Makoto E-Zine series #81 Recommended for beginner to intermediate learners of Japanese. You can purchase the printed version on Amazon by clicking here.   For Beginners to Lower Intermediates: Boost Your Japanese Journey Today!Ah, November! The air is crisp, the days are growing shorter, and the leaves are putting on their most dazzling show of the year. Just look at that cover! Isn’t it stunning? Those vivid reds and golden yellows are a celebration of Japan's famous 紅葉 — the autumn leaves that transform the landscape into a fiery canvas. If you look up 紅葉 you'll find two readings: こうよう and もみじ. Now, you might be wondering, why? Well, 紅葉(こうよう) generally refers to the vibrant autumn leaves in a broader sense, while 紅葉(もみじ) specifically highlights the beauty of the Japanese maple tree, with its delicately shaped leaves and brilliant red hue. Both readings, however, capture the spirit of fall in Japan—the season of changing colors, warm nostalgia, and leisurely strolls through nature.People travel far and wide to enjoy 紅葉狩(もみじが)り (autumn-leaf viewing) which literally means "hunting autumn leaves." It’s not so much a hunt as it is a chance to admire the beauty of nature, similar to 花見(はなみ) (cherry blossom viewing) and 月見(つきみ) (moon viewing). So, as you read through this month's Makoto, take a moment to soak in that feeling of 紅葉 — whether you picture the iconic もみじ maple leaves or just that full-blown autumn こうよう explosion of colors. Let's dive into this season together! ➡️ How to read the eBooks: You may need to follow the steps outlined in our eBook guide. ➡️ To purchase a digital or print version, kindly click the "Format" option below the product title. Learn Japanese with Stories for Beginners: Mike's Diary [Paperback] €13,95
NOTE: The digital version is found in the Beginning Japanese Phrases and Stories digital bundle.  Have you only recently learned hiragana but need practice? Or perhaps, your hiragana is no problem, but you want to build reading fluency? Mike's Diary is here to the rescue! The level of this book is somewhere between our (total beginner-level) Beri- Beri- Shoshinsha and our more advance readers such as Learn Japanese with Stories. Instead of learning isolated vocabulary (no fun!), reading real Japanese is a great way to learn vocabulary and kanji in context. For the beginner, however, native reading material is too much of a challenge. Our Learn Japanese with Stories for Beginners series enables even beginners to truly enjoy reading natural Japanese. The early stories use basic vocabulary, beginner-level grammar, and simplified Japanese sentence structures. As you progress, earlier concepts build into more complex grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structures. Each story is presented in several ways. The story with spaces and complete vocabulary and explanation The story in full Japanese (without spaces, but with furigana—the small hiragana—over kanji) The story in English to cement understanding This is followed by five important kanji found in the story. There are only five kanji here, so spend some time familiarizing yourself with them. 122 Pages Includes the digital files (PDF, ePub, and MOBI) Includes all sound files  Free Anki flashcard deck of all the vocabulary from each story Scan QR codes for quick on-demand listening as you go through the book This is a physical paperback which will be shipped to you. You'll also receive the digital files for no extra charge immediately after ordering.
Kana de Manga - The Japan Shop Kana de Manga - The Japan Shop
Kana de Manga €8,95
Paperback. 144 pages. 7 x 5 inches. -------------------   Great for beginners! American pop culture is turning Japanese. Every day, millions of kids spend hours watching translated anime on Cartoon Network and reading telephone book-sized comics called manga. From Spirited Away to Shonen Jump, if the label says "Made in Japan," it's cool. But what if you want to enjoy anime and manga in its original language? Written Japanese consists of three scripts: the phonetic hiragana and katakana syllabaries, each comprised of 46 characters (collectively known as kana); and kanji, a complex set of characters based on Chinese ideographs. Hiragana and katakana are the true "ABCs of Japanese," as they can be used to write complete sentences. Children in Japan learn to read and write hiragana and katakana long before they are introduced to kanji. Most manga targeted toward the youngest readers in Japan are also written completely in kana. Kana de Manga makes learning hiragana and katakana easy and fun for students who already enjoy Japanese comics. Each page has a humorous manga illustration representing a word that begins with the hiragana or katakana character featured prominently at the top. A brief explanation accompanies each drawing; the English equivalent of the word is given, and there is a work area where students can practice writing the characters. Written by Glenn Kardy, editor of several volumes in the popular How to Draw Manga series, including Getting Started, the first book of its kind to be used at major universities in the United States (UCLA) and Japan (Waseda). Artwork by Chihiro Hattori. Features a foreword by Ronald A. Morse, retired professor of Japan Studies at UCLA and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
