Product Details

Upgrading Japanese oral communication skills from the intermediate level, where you are able to communicate smoothly in stereotyped situations, to the advanced level where you can meet the sudden challenges of an unexpected turn in the conversation is no easy task. This transition requires study materials written in a natural Japanese style, with an interesting content somewhat removed from basic everyday life and pitched at an appropriate level of difficulty. From Clay Finding resources to help the beginning student get to the Intermediate stage is fairly easy. There are tons of textbooks and grammar books targeting the beginner and upper beginner. And while time consuming, progressing from beginner to intermediate stage seems fairly straightforward. You study organized lessons from textbooks, learn the meaning and readings of about 1000 kanji, and learn patterns of conversational Japanese that work in most situations. I don't know about you, but the time it took to go from learning konnichiwa to passing the JLPT 2 kyuu for me seemed to fly (it did take some time of course!). After passing 2 kyuu, my progress slowed down dramatically. I was in a comfort zone where my Japanese was good enough for most situations by simply following set patterns. However, when conversation turned away from the patterns I was lost (Still am very often!). This book is designed to help the student break out of the Intermediate comfort-zone barrier and to boldly enter the Advanced level. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who feels as I did. If you are tired of the lack of progress, this book may help. It is probably best for those around the JLPT 2 kyuu level (familiar with about 1000 kanji, advanced grammar).

The authors of this textbook did a very good job at picking articles that illuminate peculiar and interesting details about Japanese life and culture, and which tend to make more and more sense with repeated readings, so you shouldn't get bored. However, be prepared to look up the meanings of 100+ words per chapter. You may spend what will at first seem like a long time working your way through each of the 10 rather dense chapters, but just keep in mind that the point is not to plow through one chapter or another, but rather to learn the language. There are no English equivalents for most vocab words; therefore, have a good comprehensive dictionary before attempting this textbook. Some of the sentence structures contained in this book seem like they are not completely rooted in the 'standard' grammar of the type you find in most other textbooks, but I guess that's why they call it "Authentic Japanese." I expect to get years of worthwhile study out of this one.
