Learn Japanese through Audio Stories: Shitakiri Suzume
Perfect for beginning and upper beginning students of Japanese. This affordable Japanese reader will help you build your Japanese vocabulary, reading skills, and listening comprehension.
Shitakiri Suzume follows a common theme in Japanese fairy tales: a childless old couple raising a son or daughter. But instead of a human, the story revolves around a sparrow, the loving pet of the old man. Also common with other tales, there is a moral to the story. Don't be greedy!
The second story, Kobutori Jiisan, teaches that a happy disposition often leads to happy conclusions. While beginners to Japanese can get a lot from this, hiragana knowledge is required.
Finally, we invite the reader to contact us with questions or requests for future Japanese readers. You will find our personal email addresses in the book. To your Japanese!
Please note: you will receive a zip file which must be opened with a PC or Mac. Later, you can send the files to your phone or tablet.

READ real Japanese Today!
Are you a beginner to upper beginner level student of Japanese? If so, this reader is for you. Every word is defined and important grammatical patterns are explained in plain English. If you can read hiragana, you are ready for this book.
BONUS! Get FREE Sound Files of each story. Listen while reading. The link to the MP3s is found on the last page.
This bundle is for both volumes of the Frank and the Obaasan saga, a Japanese reader for beginners to upper beginners.
The Stories:While on an intergalactic spy mission, Frank the alien loses control of his spaceship and plummets to Earth. Japan to be precise. Lacking Essential repair materials, Frank must learn the earthling’s language and find earth equivalents of the materials needed to repair his ship.
With only a limited knowledge of Earth ways—and the Japanese language—Frank discovers a number of interesting things, not the least… natto. Join Frank and his new-found buddies in this multi-planetary adventure!
All Japanese kanji characters have furigana (small hiragana over the kanji)
25 complete episodes. 15 from the first volume and 10 from the second.
Each story is presented in real Japanese (with furigana) and with a running gloss which breaks down all vocabulary and grammar points.
Each volume is a complete story arc in which our heroes save the universe.
ENGLISH SUMMARY: Finally, we have included a simple and mostly literal English translation for you to check your understanding (Don’t cheat! Work through the Japanese first!).
Short stories makes reading full Japanese texts possible.
Download the FREE MP3s to listen while you study.
Frank and the Obaasan is a fun (certainly not serious) reader for beginners of Japanese. If you are looking for Japanese reading material that is fairly easy but not written for children, this is a resource for you.
Finally, we invite the reader to contact us with questions or requests for future Japanese readers. You will find our personal email addresses in the book. To your Japanese!

Once one zooms beyond the basics of a language, idiomatic expressions, proverbs, and slang can provide the spice to keep motivation up and progress going forward.
This book will introduce 101 of the most common Japanese idioms.
We are including at no extra charge MP3s for all the examples found in this book. Create playlists to study on the go or burn the sound files to a CD to listen at home. The download link is found on the last page. We believe the best way to learn vocabulary–by far–is to study words within their proper context. Every idiom is followed by an example sentence and a paragraph or two explaining the context and usage.
Each idiom will have three sound files associated with it. The MP3s are all recorded by native voice actors and actresses. The first sound file is the idiom itself. The second is the example sentence. The third sound file has the idiom, an English translation, the idiom repeated slowly, and the example sentence with translation. Try to mimic the Japanese speakers in sound and presentation. We highly recommend knowing hiragana before tackling this book. Every kanji here has furigana (small hiragana) over it to aid reading. If you do not yet know hiragana, please check out our Hiragana book: “Hiragana, the Basics of Japanese.”
