What's inside

3 poets, 75 haiku

One woman who gave her life to the form, and two of Japan's most famous novelists, who wrote haiku all along.

  1. Step 1

    Chiyo-ni

千代尼ちよに (1703–1775), the rare Edo-period woman who made her name as a poet. 25 poems, including the morning glory that took her well bucket, and her death poem. Read by Yumi.

  2. Step 2

    Akutagawa Ryūnosuke

芥川龍之介あくたがわりゅうのすけ (1892–1927), the author of Rashōmon, chose 77 of his own haiku for a last collection. 25 poems, many from it, like the green frog asked if it, too, is freshly painted.

  3. Step 3

    Natsume Sōseki

夏目漱石なつめそうせき (1867–1916), the author of I Am a Cat and Botchan, studied haiku with his friend Masaoka Shiki. 25 poems, including one for his cat's grave.

  4. Seven more haiku books are planned, free to you

Look inside

One poem, taken apart

1The poem, with furigana

独ひとり寝ねの さめて霜夜しもよを さとりけり

2As Chiyo-ni wrote it

独り寝の さめて霜夜を さとりけり

“Sleeping alone, I wake, and the frosty night enlightens me.”

The first poem in the Chiyo-ni book. Its season word is 霜夜しもよ, a frosty night, so it is a winter poem. The book gives four translations, explains けり, the classical ending that makes the realization land, and then retells the poem in simple Japanese.

Questions

What do I get?

3 eBooks (Chiyo-ni, Akutagawa Ryūnosuke and Natsume Sōseki) as PDF, ePub and Kobo files, 150 audio tracks, 295 Anki cards, a vocabulary cheat sheet for each book, and app access for all three.

How do I download it?

Right after checkout we email you a download link. Download everything at once on a computer, or open single books on your phone or tablet. You don't need Dropbox or any other account.

Can I read them on my phone or Kindle?

Yes. The ePub files work in Apple Books, Google Play Books and most reading apps, and the PDFs open anywhere. Our eBook guide walks you through each device.

Who reads the audio?

Yumi, a native speaker, reads the Chiyo-ni book. The Akutagawa and Sōseki books have audio for every poem and explanation too, and Yumi's own recordings of them will come to you free when they're done.

What level is it?

Upper beginner to intermediate, about JLPT N4 to N3. Every kanji has furigana and every word is explained, including the classical forms haiku use. Want more haiku? The Japanese Culture bundle has five more haiku books, on Bashō, Buson, Issa and Shiki.

Will there be more books?

Yes. The series is planned at ten books, and every new volume comes to you free, however much the price rises.

What if it isn't right for me?

Tell us within 60 days and we'll swap it for a better-fitting bundle or refund you in full.
