Japanese for Everyone is a great textbook for someone who learns from examples, appreciates brief explanations, wants a traditional textbook, and does not need lots of handholding. JFE covers more grammar, vocab, and kanji than most other textbooks for beginners; it is fast-paced and challenging, so this book is not for everyone.

JFE covers ~450 kanji (no stroke order, just furigana) and ~2500 vocab words. It will take you through roughly the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4 level. There’s a variety of quality grammar exercises, and answers are included in the back. The original audio tapes seem to be out of print, but you can find the audio online.

Overall, 9/10 if you are a self-motivated learner who wants something fast-paced.

If JFE is not your cup of tea, try Genki or An Introduction to Modern Japanese (Bowring and Laurie). Also take a look at this textbook comparison table for more ideas: http://rtkwiki.koohii.com/wiki/Comparison_of_Japanese_Textbooks_Table

This is the book I prefer most. It is faster paced then Genki, and covers the same grammar, but in one volume instead of 2. Includes the answer key, and plenty of exercises.

It does move at a faster pace, so sometimes I need to refer to an outside source to clarify something, but overall, I enjoy following the story of the main characters features, and the Japanese that goes along with it follows in a logical order.

JFE features both casual and polite forms quite early in the book, and works well for someone who wants to use Japanese with friends, and in classroom settings.
