Inubou Karuta -- Traditional Japanese Card Game
Product Details
This Karuta set is "iroha-garuta" which, in my opinion, is a great way to learn 1) Japanese traditional proverbs, 2) practice your reading skills and 3) just to have fun with Japanese. The set is called "inubou karuta" because the first card reads, "INU mo arukeba BOU ni ataru." There is a card for each of the hiragana letters. Although karuta is mainly thought of as a children's game, it can be most educational for adult learners of Japanese. If you can read hiragana, you can play karuta! The game involves a speaker sounding one of 48 proverbs--one for each hiragana--and the players compete to find the card (which are spread out face up) that starts with the first hiragana sound spoken. For example: If the reader says "Inu mo arukeba Bou ni ataru" the players immediately start to search for the card that has a big hiragana "I" and a picture of a dog on it.
