Product Details

If you have passed the beginning stages of learning hiragana and know a few kanji then you are probably looking for something to take you to that next step. Or perhaps you are an intermediate but feel like you are not progressing anymore. This book is great for the upper beginner to the advanced. Every story has Japanese and English on opposite pages. The bottom of each page has a glossary of every single kanji or difficult word on the page. The book is also divided by difficulty and length of the stories. The first section has stories of only a few pages each and are easier to understand. The stories increase in length and difficulty ending with Rashomon, the story by Akutagawa Ryunosuke which was made into a movie by Kurosawa. To top all that, the author has graciously posted MP3 sound files on his website for download! You can listen to the stories, read them in Japanese, check the glossary for meaning and finally enjoy the story in English as well. From the Publisher: Reading great books in the original should be the culmination of language study, but reading Japanese literature unassisted is a daunting task that can defeat even the most able of students. Breaking into Japanese Literature is specially designed to help you bypass all the frustration and actually enjoy classics of Japanese literature.

Breaking into Japanese Literature is the easiest way I have found to read real Japanese. The parallel text and running dictionary builds confidence, and lets you get right back to reading, instead of spending more time flipping through dictionaries than actually reading the book.

The stories progress in difficulty and length as the book progresses, and as you gain confidence, you're able to get more into the stories and enjoy the Japanese literature in it's original language.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in Japanese literature and need a way to "break into" it.
